Mental Institution White
If I ran a mental institution, I think I would paint the walls white. It's calming, bland, it doesn't speak to you like maybe fluorescent green or poppy orange. There are no voices in white that tell you to hurt your neighbor, take another dinner roll, or climb out of the 3rd story window. But, I like talking walls.

I like crazy colors.

AND, I don't run a mental institution (no snickering allowed). So, white walls don't belong in my living space. And. Yet. Everything in my house is white. Walls, ceilings, lamps, chandeliers, fans, everything. And if I paint something, I have to paint it back before leaving (like. I. want. to. do. that.) So mamas, I need to make white look good (and I obviously need to learn how to paint accents instead of every-last-inch-of-wall). Suggestions?

(If only I could change the hardware? The furniture? The SOMETHING! However, I do not control my own fate here, even the upholstered furniture in the house isn't ours. Yuck. So, superficial suggestions would be most appreciated. Now, if I could only order that parsons desk I have been coveting from West Elm. Do you think they ship to Austria?)

oh, one more thing, I'd just like to say that I take pride in helping you paint those "crazy" colors, that was a blast, and it turned out fabulously. You are so much braver than I. My whole house is two-toned...off white trim with a shocking beigish (not a word I know) wall color.

I love your green walls, too...sorry you are stuck on a world of white.

You could do what Jaci did in the dorms at USU to cover her cinder block walls ... hang floor to ceiling colored butcher paper in stripes! :)

Good luck. I know you'll make it great because you are the decorating diva!

Mara, you are totally right, white walls do not belong in your world. There is nothing more frustrating than having no control over your walls and furniture decor. I know! I have thought about fabric on my walls but haven't figure out all the quirks yet. I know you will figure something out that will be fabulous.

Ok - let's take a stab at this. :) Here in Singapore, I also have white (really gross creamy-yellow) walls, and I can paint if I repaint before I leave (except I'd hire someone to do that - I'm too old :) But I have a decorator, too -- it's my little lizard friends (they eat the mosquitoes, cockroaches, et al) and they leave little poopies along the way :( :) :(. -- dots, see?? Also, get this one! When they came to rewire the condo last year, they had to leave all the wires on the outside of the walls, and cover them with lovely white covers - now I have plaid walls -- mind you, my walls are 2-tone cream (matte and gloss because the workers don't know the difference!!) augh! Count your blessings and put up lots of pictures, masks, cultural clothing, etc. in bright colors and use lots of big, bright pillows on couches and floors.

Mara, One of my friends husband was in the military and they moved every three years. She couldn't paint either, so she put fabric on the walls. She attached it by soaking it in fabric starch (the old fashioned kind that you mix with water) and then spread it on the walls like wallpaper. It was fabulous and when they moved, she just pulled it off and wiped the walls down with cold water. Worked like a dream.

Thanks Ladies. Ok, after having soaked up your suggestions...here's the plan. Barbara-the fabric idea! Love it! I have some very large odd-shaped walls, I'm going to put fabric on them as artwork. Ikea has a fabric store here with affordable, vintage, AND modern fabrics. That's the plan for at least two walls.

I'm also going to keep most things monochrome excluding bright splashes of color in the form of big painted canvases (hubby should come in handy here). I'm even thinking about slipcovering the apholstered furniture to take out the existing palette so I can go anywhere I want with the canvases/fabric.

Now to find a canvas dealer here in Vienna and a way to get some very large canvases home. Anyone want to come and visit...and rent a truck while you're here? He he...Thanks all!
